Get to know Ms. Martinez

Ms. Martha Martinez immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of seven from Monterrey, Mexico. She grew up in the Little Village Community and attended both public and Catholic schools. She graduated from Saint Agnes Catholic School and Benito Juarez High School.  She pursued her undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she majored in Psychology and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1988.  


Upon graduating from the university, she accepted a position at the Spanish Coalition for Jobs as a Job Developer helping the Spanish-speaking community find employment.  She then accepted a position at Chicago HMO in the marketing department translating for Spanish speaking members.


Ms. Martinez's love for learning led her to continue her education while working full time. In 1996, she graduated with a Masters of Arts Degree in Education with a specialty in Bilingual and ESL Instruction. Ms. Martinez then began her teaching career at LIttle VIllage Academy as a second-grade bilingual teacher, when the school first opened its doors. 


Since then Ms. Martinez has been a loyal member of the Little Village Academy family and has formed strong bonds with many families and colleagues.  She has taught in a variety of grades, served on different school committees, extended her students' learning in the afterschool programs, has assisted in providing professional development and has mentored new teachers.  With an interest in strengthening her literacy craft, she completed her second Masters Degree as a Reading Specialist from Roosevelt University in 2010.

Ms. Martinez continues to work at Little Village Academy as the Instructional Literacy Coach providing literacy support to teachers, students and parents.  Ms. Martinez has  established a rapport with many students and their parents, always advocating on their behalf. She has served as a role model for students and continues to stress the importance of continuing their education and following their dreams. Ms. Martinez’s dedication, passion for learning and teaching keeps her going to help children find their inner confidence to grow academically and succeed in their endeavors.
